Expansion of the Hat Sheet Pile Press-in Market in Singapore

Construction Method and Steel Material Attracting Attention in Urban Development and Steadily Gaining Market Recognition

2026.7.3 NEWS RELEASE

GIKEN LTD. is developing a new market in Singapore with technical support from the GIKEN Group, as demand for the Hat Sheet Pile Press-in Method using its SILENT PILER™ is on the rise.

In the most recent year through April 2026, GTOSS™ ASIA* member companies in the country conducted hat sheet pile press-in construction in large-scale urban infrastructure development projects. These include road tunnel construction and subway renovation projects aimed at easing of traffic congestion, as well as development of one of the country’s largest sports complexes under Toa Payoh Integrated Development (TPID). These projects have been highly regarded by both industry and government stakeholders

The Hard Ground Press-in Method developed by GIKEN LTD. allows stable pile installation with high vertical accuracy and safety while suppressing vibrations and noise even in ground conditions that are difficult for conventional methods, such as sandy gravel or rock layers. Combined with 900 mm-wide hat sheet piles, which enable faster installation, the method has helped efficient construction gain traction in highly restricted urban areas. In Japan, the method is listed in the Civil Engineering Estimation Standards by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) due to its reliability and proven track record. GIKEN can also offer comprehensive support, including technical guidance and maintenance, leading to steady sales in Singapore. In the past year, a total of six hat sheet pile press-in machines compatible with the Hard Ground Press-in Method were sold.

Singapore’s construction industry is expected to grow at an average annual rate of at least 5% over the 10 years from 2025. Driving this growth are government-led large-scale transportation and environmental infrastructure development and urban redevelopment projects. To contribute to the country’s development, the GIKEN Group will continue to provide the most appropriate construction methods and machinery to GTOSS™ ASIA member companies and collaborate with them to further invigorate the press-in market.

■ Toa Payoh Integrated Development (TPID)

Toa Payoh is a housing estate in the centre of Singapore. TPID is a plan to construct a large-scale multipurpose facility featuring a sports complex as well as parks, playgrounds, community gardens, shops, restaurants, and senior welfare centres. The sports complex, positioned as the symbolic facility of this project, is one of the country’s largest, and the hat sheet pile press-in method was adopted for the retaining wall construction around the complex. GTOSS™ ASIA member company Mittri Engineering Pte. Ltd. was responsible for this construction, completing the installation of 580 steel sheet piles over a total length of 520 m in approximately eight months from July 2025 to February 2026. The complex is scheduled for completion in 2030.

■ Background to Adoption of Press-in Method

The construction required a method that could handle hard ground with high cohesiveness and an SPT-N value of 100 and accurately control the verticality of long steel materials ranging from 15 m to 24 m. The Hard Ground Press-in Method using SILENT PILER was selected as a way to fulfil these requirements. The method is most suitable for the conditions of the construction site in a dense residential area, because it allows low-vibration and low-noise pile installation and offers excellent work safety. The GIKEN Group did not simply sell machinery; Giken Seisakusho Asia Pte., Ltd. provided comprehensive technical support, from planning to construction. Before construction began, several employees of Mittri Engineering visited Japan to undergo technical training on press-in construction through the Press-in Dojo, GIKEN hands-on learning program.
