GIKEN LTD. announced that Group company Giken Seisakusho Asia Pte., Ltd. celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The company was established in 1996 as a base for developing the Southeast Asian market. At the time, there was a construction boom in Singapore, which was in the midst of economic development. Coupled with the emergence of vibrant developing countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, this was expected to be an opportunity to convey the superiority of the press-in technology and serve as leverage for expanding sales channels. After more than a quarter of a century, the pile press-in and extraction machine SILENT PILER™ has been deployed in 16 countries and regions in Asia. Along with increased recognition, the press-in technology has accumulated trust and achievements, establishing a solid position as a safe and reliable method in Singapore that is even recognised by its government.

In 2021, GTOSS™ ASIA, a service that gives comprehensive support to users of press-in machineswas made available for the first time outside Japan. By addressing and solving issues occasionally seen at construction sites, such as insufficient operator proficiency and inadequate machine maintenancethis service helped to improve confidence in the press-in method and enhanced the business profits of press-in machine usersGiken Seisakusho Asia Pte., Ltd. oversees more than 100 companies that are users of press-in machines and also actively develops new markets such as India. As a result, it is expected to achieve record-high sales for a second consecutive fiscal year*.

■ Role in Asia and Contributions to the GIKEN Group

When Giken Seisakusho Asia Pte., Ltd. was established, Singapore was rapidly enhancing its urban functions, with numerous public construction projects—such as subway development—underway. There was prominent construction pollution such as noise and vibration, similar to that experienced during Japan’s period of rapid growth. Advocated as an environmentally friendly piling method, press-in technologies gradually gained attention from government officials and began to be steadily adopted. This led to successful bids for large-scale projects such as the construction of an expressway at Marina Wharf. Subsequently, this technology started spreading to neighbouring countries. Besides being adopted in 2004 for a water intake facility project in Sri Lanka under Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) program, the press-in method was also used in other projects, such as the project for the construction of Hong Kong’s Stonecutters Bridge, one of the world’s longest spanning cable-stayed bridges. In March 2021, a representative office opened in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, further accelerating the spread of the press-in method, which continues to be adopted in projects, such as a long-term river bank protection project along the Pasak River.

In recent years, Giken Seisakusho Asia Pte., Ltd. has also been focusing on spreading the adoption of the Gyropress Method™—a method for rotary cutting press-in of tubular piles—in Singapore, working together with Guan Chuan Engineering Construction Pte Ltd to build a track record. Guan Chuan is a strong local partner and member of GTOSS™ ASIA. Besides construction projects in urban areas, the company is enhancing its technical proposal activities for storm surge and flood control as well as projects for strengthening levees and revetments at airports and coastal areas.
