Giken Seko awarded Cairo University Pediatric Hospital construction works in Egypt

2019.8.5 NEWS RELEASE

Giken Ltd group company Giken Seko Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Kochi, Japan CEO: Atushi Ohira) has been awarded a construction works contract for the Cairo University Pediatric Hospital in Egypt. The retaining wall works are part of major construction works being undertaken by the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) program for the construction of new hospital facilities in Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Construction is scheduled to commence in mid-August and will utilize Giken’s "Zero Clearance Method."

Cairo, one of the largest cities in the Middle East and North Africa, faces a shortage of specialist doctors, medical equipment, and medical facilities. These construction works will expand the facilities at the Cairo University Pediatric Hospital [CUSPH] and assist in combatting these shortages. The hospital was established in 1982 with the support of Japan and is known locally as the “Japanese Hospital”. It has played a central role in providing pediatric healthcare at an affordable cost however, with aging facilities and limited space, there is a need to enhance the hospital’s capacity by establishing new infrastructure.

The retaining wall construction, incorporating below ground excavation was originally planned with traditional construction and piling methods. However potential negative impacts on existing adjacent structures as well as high ground water levels led to a change in design, utilizing Giken’s Press-In method of sheet pile installation. From among the Press-In alternatives, Giken’s "Zero Clearance Method" was adopted to ensure both the minimization of dead space between the adjacent structures, and the alleviation of construction noise and vibration. The “Zero Clearance Method” has been used extensively by Giken in Japan.

The project will utilize 46 no. 7.5 meter and 100 no. 10.5 meter Zero Sheet Piles in an area of approximately 30 x 19 meters. Using the Zero Piler TM Giken Seko works will be driven by safety and efficiency.

This project is an excellent opportunity to prove the superiority and efficiency of the environmentally friendly Press-in Method in the Middle East and North Africa region. Giken is proud to continue to actively promote implant construction methodologies to the world.
