GIKEN LTD. (Head Office: Kochi-shi, Kochi; President and CEO: Atsushi Ohira) announced that the Hard Ground Press-in Method using the pile press-in and extraction machine SILENT PILER™, which is manufactured and sold by GIKEN, has been adopted for the first time in the Republic of Indonesia. This method is being used for construction under a sewerage development project in Jakarta, the country’s capital. In addition, group company GIKEN SEKO CO., LTD. (Head Office: Kochi-shi, Kochi; President and CEO: Akihiro Nishigawa) provided consulting support to the joint venture that acts as the project’s main contractor, offering comprehensive support from site surveys before the start of construction to the provision of piling plans and technical guidance.
Jakarta has a low coverage rate of sewerage systems and faces an increasingly severe water quality issue. Under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) program, sewerage development has been planned for the entire city. This time, as construction was taking place in a narrow urban area with especially high traffic, the Hard Ground Press-in Method of GIKEN was adopted as it can save space and carry out piling with high accuracy and speed while limiting vibrations and noise. The technology of GIKEN, which cleared the on-site limitations, was highly evaluated during the on-site visit in May, which had approximately 50 participants, including consultants and staff from specialised construction companies. GIKEN will seek to secure further projects while continuing with such efforts.
GIKEN will continue to increase its presence overseas and contribute to the realisation of a sustainable society on a global scale by taking advantage of its unique technologies to develop high-quality infrastructure.

■Overview of Sewerage Development Project in Jakarta*
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia, yet its coverage rate of sewerage system currently remains at approximately 12% with a lack of full-scale sewerage development. Domestic wastewater is directly discharged into rivers, and there are concerns about worsening water quality and damage to health. The development of sewerage systems—including wastewater treatment plants and sewerage pipelines—has become a pressing issue.
Currently, based on the “Jakarta Wastewater Management Master Plan” formulated with the technical cooperation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a plan that divides the city into 15 sewerage zones for development in stages is being advanced. For Zone 1, construction of sewerage systems spanning approximately 38.5 km is planned.

■ Construction Details

U sheet piles will be pressed in using SILENT PILER™ F201 to build the starting shaft for underground tunnelling machines so as to construct sewers without open-cut excavation.
■Reason for Adoption
Issues with surrounding environment, construction period, and accuracy when using other construction methods
The site is an area with high traffic. At first, another construction method using a vibro-driving system was considered, but it faced issues such as vibrations and noise during construction and a lack of space for applying the method. Furthermore, due to the hard ground, piling can take place after the ground has been excavated by excavating machines. As ground excavation and piling could not be carried out by the same machine, there were concerns about prolongation of the construction period and the accompanying increase in costs. In addition, as piles had to be held at the top edge when driving into the earth, this made it difficult to direct the force straight down through the pile, and displacement of the pile toes increased, especially in the case of long piles.

Hard Ground Press-in Method overcomes issues
Therefore, a construction method for pressing steel sheet piles into hard ground using the unique coring theory of GIKEN was adopted. In this method, a pile auger is attached to SILENT PILER™ for simultaneous augering and pressing-in. Pressing-in can be carried out even on sandy gravel mixed with boulders, rock, or other types of ground without losing the superiorities of the press-in technology, such as vibration-free, noise-free, and space-saving construction. Additionally, pile pressing-in and ground excavation can be carried out by the same machine. This approach reduces both the construction period and costs, resulting in extremely efficient construction. The amount of soil discharged is also low by minimising excavation, and completed piles with strong bearing capacity can be built without disturbing the surrounding ground.
In addition, another feature recognised is that SILENT PILER™ grabs the pile near the ground when pressing in. The down-stroke power can thus be properly conveyed to the pile, making it difficult for displacement of the pile toe to occur.
